Letters to Alex

December 18, 2010

Dear Baby,
Today I found out that I am pregnant with you and I am so excited.  You are an answer to prayer and I thank God for the gift of you.  Your daddy and I are so happy and can’t wait to go on this incredible journey of bringing you into our family.
Love,
Mom

Dear Peanut,
Daddy and I got to see you and hear your heartbeat for the first time today.  You resembled a little lima bean on the sonogram screen.  Your heart was beating 182 beats per minute!  We could see the little flicker in the center of your chest which was your little heart going strong.  I am so amazed by God’s intricate design that my little peanut is going to be my little boy or little girl come August.  Psalm 139:13 has such a more profound meaning to me now as it says

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.
Love,
Mom

Dear Alex,
You brought me such comfort today as I got to hear the words “It’s definitely a boy!”.  Today would have been your Grandpa LaCotti’s 72nd birthday and I miss him terribly.  You have grown so much in the 2 months since we last saw you on the sonogram.  You looked like a little person and were moving around, kicking your legs, moving your arms, even sucking your thumb at one point.  We didn’t think we were going to get to find out if you were a boy or girl because you weren’t in the right position.  At the last possible moment, you moved and sat on the camera and the sonographer said “it’s a boy, yep, it’s definitely a boy!”.  Your daddy is so excited to teach you how to play with trucks and G. I. Joe’s; I am so excited to have my little boy.  I can’t believe that in a matter of months you will be here and I thank God daily for the gift of your life.
Love,
Mom

Dear Alex,
Welcome to the world little man!  You finally have graced this world with your presence and I know my life will never be the same.  I can’t believe that you are here and I can hold you in my arms and kiss your precious face.  I have spent 9 months dreaming of this moment and my dreams couldn’t hold a candle to this.  I am so excited as we begin this new chapter in our lives.
No one can decide who you look like.  I’m guessing that you’re the perfect blend of Daddy and me.  You’ve got long legs that you don’t like to curl up; you stretch them out straight and leave them out.  I’m praying for your sake that you get your Daddy’s height.  You might have my eyes, we’ll see if they stay light or if they turn brown like Daddy’s.
I look forward to making memories and sharing our favorite traditions with you; carving pumpkins and trick or treating at Halloween, baking pies at Thanksgiving, decorating the tree at Christmas.  Your Daddy can’t wait to introduce you to Indiana Jones, Star Wars and G. I. Joes.  The three of us are going to have so much fun together!
I am so honored that God has chosen me to be your Mom.  I promise to do be the best Mom I possibly can be for you.  I promise to love you with all my heart, to teach and guide you as you learn and grow, and to always be someone you can depend on.  I can’t wait to see where this adventure takes us!
Love,
Mom

You smiled at mommy for the first time.  I went in to check on you in the morning, there you were laying there looking up at me.  A big smile spread across you face when you saw me.  I got so excited I ran into the other room to tell your Daddy.  I didn’t mean to run away…I was just so thrilled!

Today was Grandmom Jones’ birthday.  We went over her house and celebrated.  Your Aunt Allyson, Uncle Chris and cousin Carter were there.  You don’t seem to care of Uncle Chris; you give him questioning looks.  We think it’s his beard, but we’ll see if in time you warm up to him.
Uncle Matt and Aunt Maggie were there too.  You hung out with them in the kitchen for a while.
You smiled for Grandmom for the first time; that was an awesome birthday present.

Today is my birthday, my first as your Mommy.  You met Santa Claus for the first time today.  You didn’t fuss or cry when we sat you on his lap – you just looked around and took it all in.  Daddy and I jumped around and made silly faces trying to get you to smile for the picture.  In the end, you gave Daddy a big grin when he was standing off to the side and your first official Santa visit photo was captured.  This was exactly what I wanted to do for my birthday, I’m hoping to make this my birthday tradition for as long as you will stand it.  Love you baby!

You rolled over, from tummy to back, for the first time today.  You did this at Grandmom’s house.  She said you did it right in front of her (or she wouldn’t have believed it!).  You did it again for Mommy when we came home.  Grandmom thinks it’s a fluke, but we’ll see.

Nope, it’s not a fluke.  You’ve learned to roll.  You did it three times in a row for Aunt Marsha today.  She was so excited, she called me at work to tell me about it!

Today is your first Christmas Eve.  We went to church and then to Aunt Donna’s to see the family.  Your great grandparents, great Aunt’s and Uncle’s were there and grandmom and grandpop.  Aunt Beth gave you some clothes and a really cool play table that turns into a walker.  You have to wait a little while to play with it, but it will be lots of fun!

Merry Christmas baby!  Granted, this year you don’t really know what all is going on but next year you’re going to have a blast.  You played on your playmat while we opened presents.  Then we went to Grandmom’s house to have breakfast and open more presents.  Afterwards, we went to Aunt Marsha’s house for dinner and you got even more presents!  You are very loved.

December 31, 2011 (New Years Eve)

We took you to see the Jarretsville Fire Department Train Garden today.  This was your first visit to a train garden.  We bought a train car for you, the first in the series (car # 77).  We plan to go back each year and get you the next one to build your train.

Happy Valentine’s Day sweetheart!  Today is your first Valentine’s day.  You wore your heartbreaker outfit that Grandmommy got you.  The big news for today is that you sat up for the first time without falling over.  Up until now you could sit by yourself if you were hunched over, with your hands on your feet.  When you would straighten your back, you would start to fall to one side or the other.  Aunt Marsha’s been having you “practice”, and today you did it.  She showed you how to put your hands out and balance.  I took a fun video of you sitting – you seem quite pleased with yourself!

You’ve been doing this adorable thing that I want to tell you about.  When we arrive at our destination (whether it be Grandmommy’s house, Aunt Marsha’s house, home); if you are awake, once I turn off the car and get out you turn your head in the direction of the door next to your seat that I will be opening in a matter of moments in expectation.  You have figured out cause and effect in that Mommy parks the car, turns it off then comes to get you!  When I open the door you smile at me because you know soon you will be free from your car seat to wiggle around as you please.  I like to think that you smile because you see me (we’ll go with that!)  I took your picture this morning when we got to Grandmommy’s house….morning smile and all!
